Simplify Your Search

Jesus doesn’t downplay our needs.

He acknowledges them.

We have a lot of needs. In order to meet those needs, we often embark on an overwhelming journey to supply them. These needs lead us to wander from source to source in hope to find some satisfaction or an answer we desperately need, yet if we are honest, we feel exhausted because trying to meet all of our needs pulls us in many different directions. Jesus sees us in all of our searching and offers us a better way. In Matthew 6:25-33, all He is really saying is simplify your search.

The beautiful message Jesus delivers in these verses is that we can get everything we need from one place rather than endlessly searching for it. No matter the need, seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you (v. 33).

  1. Jesus doesn’t downplay our needs. He acknowledges them, and He reassures us that He is aware all of our needs.
  2. Rather than give us a bunch of hoops to jump through, Jesus simplified our journey by giving us one directive.
  3. Jesus tells us to seek His kingdom in these verses because we are so prone to seek a different kingdom. That kingdom being the world. It’s when we seek the world that we become distracted with all of its cares and yield no fruit in our walk with God. Jesus gives us something new and higher to aim for – that being His kingdom.
  4. We all have a sense of what we believe to be right, but Jesus directs us to pursue what He has established as right. Benson puts it perfectly in his commentary on these verses. “Not your own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness of God by faith.” Christ gives us His righteousness. There is no need to make ourselves righteous. Rather, the only thing we have to do is pursue God’s way of doing things.

I am not sure about you, but there have been times I’ve sat by myself overwhelmed by all the needs that weighed on my shoulders. There have been plenty of times I walked out into the world to see if it had what I needed. I always came back to God emptier than before. I am so incredibly thankful that Jesus simplified our search process. Now, I go back to these verses every time I feel weighed down by the needs of my life. I can confidently say that everything we need will be supplied if we simplify our search to seeking God and His way of walking in this life. Counterintuitive I know, but in the end, so much easier than wandering aimlessly in the world hoping for something that it cannot supply.
